Isis...
Daughter of Earth...Sister of Sky...Goddess
of Magic...Enchantress...
Isis represents birth, growth and healing. Honored as
a protector of marriage and motherhood she held power
over life and death. Her image is often found depicted
on coffins along with her sister, Nepthys, wings outstretched,
escorting the dead to the underworld where her husband
Osiris was ruler.
Perhaps the most beautiful tale in the saga of Isis and
Osiris tells of her search throughout Egypt for her dead
husbands body. Upon finding him, Isis transforms herself
into a magnificent Sparrowhawk and rises into the air
to mourn over the body of her beloved. She beats her wings,
stirring the winds, thus filling his lungs with sweet
air and restoring him to life. As
a winged goddes, Isis personified the wind and brought
heavenly scents and fresh air unto the land. She also
purified the air when escorting souls to the underworld
where she would feed them. In Egyptian religion birds
are found at the top of the evolutionary chain, so to
speak, with reptiles at the bottom and humans somewhere
in the middle. And so, to be re-incarnated as a bird was
highly desirable. Isis
was and is the ultimate manifestation of the goddess found
in religions throughout the world as she represents the
deeply femine ability to create from the void and nurture.
